Chief Calarca, depicted on this coin, was Pijaos Indian warrior of South America. The Pijaos Indians were famed for their cruelty, and they fiercely resisted the Conquistadors, during the Spanish Conquest in the 1400's.
Colombia was named after Christopher Columbus. Colombia is bordered on the east by Venezuela and Brazil, on the south by Ecuador and Peru, on the north by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by Panama and the Pacific Ocean. Colombia is the only country in South America that borders both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.
