The Coat of Arms on this coin has the following: Two large birds are the Scarlet Ibis (left) and the Cocrico (right), the national birds of Trinidad and Tobago. The two birds on the shield are hummingbirds. Three ships represent the Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta: the 3 ships of Christopher Columbus. Below the birds is the nation's motto, "Together We Aspire, Together We Achieve". The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was under British rule until it gained it's Independence on August 31, 1962, when it became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
